WIRED featured Arkose Labs CEO Kevin Gosschalk in a feature on the evolution of CAPTCHA and why most bot-deterring challenges have quietly disappeared from the web. Gosschalk explained that Arkose's MatchKey challenges are designed around "cost-proofing" rather than human-proofing — making it economically unviable for bad actors to continue attacking a site. He also described how the company defeats large language model-based attacks by serving novel, unusual challenges that AI models have no prior exposure to. The piece surveys Google, Cloudflare and other security vendors on how invisible, behavior-based analysis has largely replaced traditional visual puzzles.
